Department of Pharmaceutics

  • The science and technology associated with pharmacy has progressed enormously over the past few decades. Significant advances in understanding of diseases have necessitated the need to optimize the drug therapy. The pharmaceutics includes the emerging concepts, new theories and their practical applications in the development and the production of the Dosage forms and now they are appropriately termed as the drug delivery systems.

  • Biopharmaceutics is a major branch of pharmaceutical sciences. It concerns the relationship between the physical and chemical properties of a drug in a dosage form and the pharmacologic and toxicologic or clinical response observed after the administration. The study of biopharmaceutics has been extended beyond that of descriptive discipline by the development of pharmacokinetics, which concerns the study and characterization of the time course of therapeutics and adverse effects of drugs.

  • Pharmaco-Kinetics involves the application of mathematics and biochemistry in a physiologic and pharmacologic context. The development of clinical pharmcokinetics is the culmination and logical outcome of advances in the area of pharmacokinetics, clinical pharmacology, toxicology, analytical chemistry, biopharmceutics and therapeutics. Simply stated, clinical pharmacokinetics is a health science that deals with the application of pharmacokinetics to the safe and effective therapeutic management of the individual patient.

    Pharmaceutical Chemistry

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry is considered to be the heart of pharmacy course. It deals with the basic aspects of drug discovery such as Identification & validation of various drug targets, design of ligands to interact with these targets and synthesis of those ligands utilizing different chemical techniques.

    Pharmacology

  • Pharmacology is the science concerned with all aspects of the action of drugs and other chemicals on living systems. Its primary aim is the discovery of chemical mechanisms by which cellular and molecular functions are regulated for the purpose of understanding how existing drugs act and to develop new drugs for treatment and diagnosis of human diseasese broad scope of interests of pharmacology ranges from the study of intermolecular reactions of chemical constituents of cells with drugs to the effectsof drugs and established therapeutic agents on mammalian physiological organ systems.

  • Professional pharmacologists tend toward careers in basic research and teaching in academia, in conducting innovative research in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry or for government laboratories and in ensuring the safety of drugs and chemicals through work at government agencies.

    Pharmaceutical Analysis

  • Analysis of drugs and pharmaceutical formulations is the backbone ofresearch and development in pharmaceutical industry. The department focuses on training the graduate and post graduate students on how to use the modern and newer instrumental analytical techniques such HPLC, GC, FTIR, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, UV-Visible Spectroscopy, Fluorimetry, Flame photometry etc.

  • Special emphasis is laid on the implementation of good laboratory practices and analytical skills. The department has all the features to get recognized as center for research by the university, which is under process. The department is actively involved in developing new analytical methods and their validation, characterization and quantitative estimation of possible impurities in various dosage forms.

  • The Department has collaborated with leading pharmaceutical companies for projects in analytical method development and manufacturing process validation. This fruitful collaboration has resulted in generating invaluable information and data that has been published in national and international journals and papers.

  • Areas of Research Development and validation of new analytical methods by using HPLC, HPTLC, LC-MS, Spectrofluorimetric and Spectrophotometric Techniques.

  • Further, several papers have been published in various journals and presentations have been made by Faculty and PG Students of the Department.
